BYOND Name: Umbranort

Reason Banned: Killed and cremated an innocent Clown, because I "assumed" they were a changling, as the Chapel. Disconnected when questioned about it.

Admin who banned: CawingCrow (Ban was issued on 2018-12-07 / 14:38:57 / Round ID 15447

Length Banned: 11000 minutes. (Expires on 2018-12-15 / 05:58:57

Appeal Reason:
Alright... I have quite a bit to say. Before I start, I would like to preface this by saying that I am a new player to SS13 and the BYOND platform in general. Actually... It's quite clear that I'm new because people seem to notice that type of thing easily around here. One, I ended up DCing because I was a bit late for getting ready for work. I didn't think that I would end up getting banned for an entire week. Now that I have some time, rather than waiting until the 15th like I had planned on doing, I decided to post an appeal simply because I have a little issue with how this was handled in the first place.

Two. The situation itself. My character, a Chaplen, was convinced by others that the changling was mascaraing as a clown through various sources. Source number one being the obvious headset. There was communication by personnel claiming that, on multiple occasion, a clown was sighted causing more than just typical mischief and, later, was identified as a changing. The second source of convincing was witnessing the clown sprint through the bar, into the maintenance hall with bloodied clothing. The janitor on duty at the bar commented that he saw that clown dragging a body earlier, further convincing my character that it was up to more than just playing a few tricks. The final piece of convincing was from the clown itself. It walked into the bar, threw a strange looking tennis ball that, if I can remember correctly, may have had some sort of electrical property. Since my Chaplen was already wary and even scared of being killed by the clown, this was the final feather that broke the bridge for them. They hunted them down. In that process, yet another thing the clown does bolstered my character's suspicion. Upon tracking him down, my chaplen found the clown actively tinkering with a droid with a pair of wire cutters. To my character, it appeared as if he was about to do something malicious with the droid. As my character approached, they took a swing at the clown, convinced that they were a changling. The chaplen killed the clown and was going to call the med team to see about the corpse until the janitor came over. He suggested that changling bodies have to be burned or destroyed one way or the other. Of course, having access to a crematory, the Chaplen jumped right to it, getting rid of the body in order to rid the station of the changling. In the end, he was wrong and was arrested.

Now I'm fine that he was arrested. What he thought was heroic turned out to be a false coincidence, leading up to him killing the wrong person. The thing I have the issue with is admin involvement in a situation like this one. This was all a part of RP and within the sanctions of the rules. Asking me "why did I kill a clown and burn him" shows that there was no attempt at reading server logs to grasp the situation before taking care of it. I killed a clown because my character believed that they were of great harm to the station and, as a character with protecting others in mind, getting rid of the clown was the next step. Of course, you could argue the point that since they were a chaplen, they had no business killing anything besides a cultist or demon, and you'd be right. Either way, right or wrong, RPing a character of that caliber is not against the rules.

Now let's pretend that doing this actually "was" against the rules. A week long ban is unnecessary especially since this is my first offense. For just about every other server, every other game, something like this would warrant a warning or maybe a 3 day ban at most. On top of being my first offense, this occurred at the very end of the round. Really? A week long ban for a misunderstanding that was built up through genuine RP at the end of a round? Someone on the staff team has to see how over-the-top this is. As an ex staff member of various Discords and RP servers via Starbound and other games, something like this isn't even worth a punishment.

Well I think that's all I have. I'm slow to reply since, like I said eariler, I work and all that jazz.

Hey there, to get the most important part out: Disconnecting, while an Admin contacts you is always a bannable offense, no matter on what server you are on. If you were in a hurry, you could have just let us know, instead of just leaving without a saying. A week ban seems reasonable for me, if you consider, that you were breaking a number of rules and thought, it was okay to do so. This showed us, that you weren't properly reading our rules. This is not TG, after all.

You were going out of your jobs way to hunt for a “changeling”, just because you heard someone saying it over the radio. As a chapel, you're not authorized to walk around and hunt for Antagonists, that’s considered Validhunting and can be found in a ruleset. There were plenty of security around, who could have taken care of that threat, instead of you. Not forgetting, that the Clown wasn't a changeling.

Your reasoning is also very lacklustre. Seriously, you were killing and cremating him because of bloody clothing, a “sparking tennis ball” and fucking around with a cyborg with a wirecutter? Side node: The Clown was resetting the cyborg, that's why he was using a wirecutter.

None of this convinces me, to shorten the ban drastically, maybe a day, because of your lengthy appeal and misunderstanding.

Moved to denied since the ban expired on it's own.
